South African coffee brand, Vida e Caffe, likes to involve the local community in many ways. From training friendly baristas to the lastest competition – design a sleeve and win a year’s worth of coffee. I am sure they will be getting quite a few entries – some prettier than others.

Prettier? Not quite a word that you will use to describe a sleeve for a coffee cup, unless your name is Lavanya Naidoo and you have entered this design.

Cannot help, but wonder – how do they make these?

“Paper Dreams” is a Junior Degree Project, by Kenneth Onulak, that he worked on over his Spring semester at RISD.

“I wanted the animation to have a dream like quality exploring the reality and space in which the dream exists and felt that the cutout technique fit this idea. Color was another consideration that I built into the design of the animation to help enhance the dreamlike qualities of the film. From here the idea grew and as I did studies involving birds, umbrellas, water, trees, and other things I was able to refine my idea and break it down to find the core essentials of the film.”

The final film took 12 weeks to complete, has beautiful music by John Nolan, he thanked his Grandma, and I think I will watch it again – just because.

Just in time for the World Cup and maybe you can send it to someone who won’t be able to make it to South Africa to experience the 2010 gees (spirit).
