notcot visits the mercer.

How much does Narry love detail? A lot (please add Ross Gellar hand gestures to describe “a lot”).

Earlier this year Jean Aw from NOTCOT visited The Mercer Hotel in SoHo, New York. I am still blown away by the “subtle” (yet all over the place) branding and all the thought and detail that went into it.

All photos by Jean Aw for NOTCOT.

every home.

Every home needs a kitchen with a big sink and a big counter.

Every home needs a comfy seat and spot colors.

Every home needs a pup.

Spot the pup. Kill the clutter.

Every home needs light. Big windows and lots of natural light. Hello big kitchen window.

And according to Narry, everyone needs a home in Brooklyn.

Love.

Use nicetranslator is you do not understand that. I kid, I kid.

De wachtende spijker is Dutch for “The Waiting Nail”. I’d like a few of those and it reminded me of the construction workers at Rockefeller Center. This photo was taken on September 29, 1932 on the 69th floor of the GE Building.

I have a framed version in my apartment and my stomach turns every time I look at it, but I love it oh-so-much.

whimsy & spice.

By now, everyone knows that I have a slight obsession with Billy’s Bakery. Their red velvet cupcakes are honestly one of the best things I have ever tasted. Yes, I am very serious when I say that and I will even put my name on it.

Today I discovered Whimsy & Spice. Located in Brooklyn and by the looks of it, it will mostly likely be my weekly supplier of cookies. Just look at it – double YUM.

Chocolate Orange Cardamom, Honey Lavender, Brown Sugar Gingerspice, Cinnamon Chocolate Malt, Chocolate Chili Cashew, Chocolate Gingersnaps – to name a few.

For now Woolies “Suikerkoekies” will have to do. Have you tried those? No? Go to Woolies now, as in right now. I promise you will kinda, sorta fall in love.

laptop sleeves by evan hecox.

Another reason to get my laptop fixed. Gimme gimme gimme!

Then I can go to Vida with my laptop and look “cool”. Of course I’d pick New York, but when it comes to these laptop sleeves by Evan Hecox – I want Tokyo.

kate and keith.

The couple shares a lovely little apartment with their little one and it sure does have a whole lot of character – in New York. Okay, let’s love… seeing that we love The Selby so much.

amanda wachob.

Amanda has been tattooing since 1998 and she has quite a unique style – some look like paintings, some like paint smudges and others random doodles. I love the random doodles, which is why my tattoos tend to look like prison tattoos. Eek.

If you’d like to have Amanda’s artwork on your body, you might have to make an appointment 3 to 4 months in advance. I’d say it’s worth it.

good ideas salon.

PSFK runs Good Ideas Salons to bring together forward-thinkers to share ideas that make things better, whether it’s better work, better play, or a better world. Another reason why I belong in New York.

Are You Indispensable?

On the morning of February 4, PSFK will host a Good Ideas Salon at Soho House with special guest Seth Godin. Good Ideas Salons are designed to bring likeminds together to share ideas and positivity around certain subjects.

For this intimate event, Seth will present ideas from his latest book Linchpin, and will openly discuss with the audience their experiences as linchpins at work. PSFK will also orchestrate some (opt-in) match making where attendees will have the opportunity to meet peers who can share knowledge with them and in turn become indispensable at work.

Who Should Attend?

Linchpins invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They make their customers and peers happy. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn it into a kind of art.

Inspiration to make things better.

Seeing that I could not attend – sadface – I had to follow it on Twitter and here are a few quotes:

“It’s not art if it doesn’t change people!” – Seth Godin
“They should dock your pay for going to meetings.” – Seth Godin
“Teach kids to solve interesting problems and lead. Don’t just teach them to become good note takers.” – Seth Godin
Seth Godin’s signature says: “Go, make something happen!”

you gotta start.

You know those days when you feel like whatever you have “accomplished” up until now, is the equivalent of one giant bucket filled with a whole lotta nothing? Yeah. That is me today.

I have been listening to the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack (wondering how I can escape to my own world), looking at men’s fashion and deciding what I will wear next winter.

Just so you know, it does not help – at all.

I used to be a go-getter. There was nothing I could not do and nothing I could not get. If I wanted it – it was mine.

A few minutes ago, I did my normal *click click* and ended up at NOTCOT. After another *click click* I somehow made my way to one of the first “me” posts. This is what I found:

You gotta start somewhere… you gotta start sometime… so why not start now?

This is the beginning of something. If only to stop being bored and having anyone around get annoyed with my restlessness, and perhaps even propel me out of this lull that I’ve rolled into. A little momentum is useful, and perhaps necessary.

Now what do you call that? Written for me? Yes, I think so – written for me and everyone else who feels the same way.

Time to rephrase: I used to be am a go-getter. There was is nothing I could cannot do and nothing I could cannot get. If I wanted want it – it was WILL be mine.

Word. Hollaaa! Now go get it.

on my way to dumbo, bk.

Yes, I am moving to Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Tower Clock Penthouse looks promising. At only $25 million you can live in the most expensive apartment in Dumbo. The infamous “Clocktower” apartment complex is selling its top floor triplex penthouse apartment. Only $25 million to make all your dreams come true.
