seriously delicious.

Food, food, food – yes, it is all about food. As usual.

Other than the bacon, pancake and maple syrup stacks we have been making (vegan much?), there are quite a few recipes that I have been making that turned out to be seriously delicious. Recipes that I do not want to forget, because I want to make it again.

Recipe book alert! Need to write these down asap. Pictures and handwritten recipes, like my mom (and probably your gran) used to (still) do.

Warm Butternut Squash and Chickpea Salad

I have changed this recipe slightly and made a coconut milk dressing instead. Do not ask me how, I cannot remember. Coconut milk, lemon juice and stuff. Will figure than one out when I write it down.

Kale and Sweet Potato Soup

Sounds gross, tastes oh-so-goooood. Really, you can trust me on this one. I did not use kale though, but spinach instead.

Simple Chicken Curry

We did not take any pictures. We ate it all, fast. Too fast. Served it with roti and basmati rice (enough carbs?).

My requirements for a recipe? Um, 5 ingredients or less. Maybe 6 ingredients, but 7, that is just pushing it. This one has 6 ingredients, because I did not add the potatoes. The peas got left behind too. Chicekn and sauce.

Note: add salt and pepper to taste. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar if you prefer a slightly sweeter taste to your curry (it was yum).

Fresh Strawberry Pistachio Crumble

It is sweet, it is sour, it is dee-lee-ssscious. I made half, but stuck to the full amount when it comes to crumble. Next time I will have to make less. Or I do not know, more butter, or less butter? You decide.

Had left overs for lunch and it tasted even better than the day it was made. Yum! Last night, we served it with custard. Tasty, tasty – but I prefer it ice cold, straight outta the fridge.

That’s all folks!

There are quite a few more recipes, but I do not want to make you hungry…

where is narry?

Narry moved and found a family, including a little baby.

Narry enjoys wheat-free, dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan food. Newbie. Strawberry, banana bread – do not forget the buttermilk. Always add buttermilk. Vegan-what?

Narry enjoys online shopping a bit too much, but sometimes it is necessary.
Beach days are fun days, especially when the dogs wear hoodies.

Lately, Narry enjoys homemade soup. Bread, there has to always be bread. Warm. Crispy. Brrreaaad.

There is no home like a home filled with dogs. Puppies. Wrinkly puppies, and their little ponies.

Narry has been going for anti-aging skin treatments and started using ‘bionic face cream’ – amazing stuff. There are action heroes in the bathroom and we support the Sunflower Fund.

Food, food and more food. Birthday caaaaake and beautiful people. Food. Late night dinners and early morning dinners. Yes, I said dinner. It is all about the crispy bacon, flapjacks and maple syrup. For breakfast, not dinner.

Lately Narry climbs mountains too. A few steps closer to heaven.

Where have you been?

have cake, will travel.

Me too, me too.

Celine Steen was born in Switzerland, but have been living in California since 1999. In 2005 she went vegan and began her blog ‘Have cake, will travel‘ in 2007 . Oh, happy day!

I saw a photo on Pinterest and now I am hooked, and even happier to know that most of these recipes are vegan.

Hungry yet? Want more? Have cake, will travel.

toast, chocolate, olive oil, and sea salt.

You have to be kidding.

Toast and chocolate. With olive oil, and sea salt. Toast. Dark chocolate. Slightly melted.

I have no idea what to say, but Amanda said “I first had this treat late one night at a tapas bar in Barcelona. The woman behind the bar set down a small plate, then explained apologetically, ‘This is not our normal dessert. Our pastry chef is on vacation.’ Moments later, I was very glad he was.”

For some strange reason I feel like screaming.

Eight 1⁄4-inch-thick baguette slices
8 thin 1-inch squares best-quality bittersweet chocolate
Extra virgin olive oil for sprinkling
Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

1. Heat the oven to 350 ºF / 180 ºC. Lay the bread slices on a baking sheet. Lay a chocolate square on top of each. Sprinkle with a little olive oil and sea salt.
2. Bake until the chocolate is molten but not seeping through the bread, about 3 to 5 minutes. The bread should crisp slightly but not toast. Sprinkle with a little more olive oil and salt, and serve immediately.

Serves: 4 (and then you ask for more)

wishlist: books.

Bookstores with comfy chairs and coffee shops are my favorites. No, I do not drink coffee, but that does not mean that I do not love the smell. I do enjoy a cup of Chai or vanilla Rooibos though.

When a there is a magazine stand that you can browse through, while sitting in the comfy chair with a steaming hot, cup of Chai tea it will feel like you are at home.

There are bookstores like that? Yes, I have been there. A few times.

If you can sit in a comfy chair, with a steaming hot cup of Chai tea – in a bookstore – why do you even bother going to the bookstore? Stay at home. It is different, but if I had to stay at home, I would like to have these books, please.

Wishlist alert.

Earth to Table by Jeff Crump & Bettina Schormann

Do not worry, the chicken is only used for eggs.

“… not only does it educate readers regarding the concept of Slow Food and the importance of supporting local farmers, it gives them a wealth of recipes to make the most of their bounty. Not only does it educate readers regarding the concept of Slow Food and the importance of supporting local farmers, it gives them a wealth of recipes to make the most of their bounty. Recipes are grouped by season, highlighting ingredients at their peak in concoctions. Peppered with tips on planning an herb garden, composting and getting the most out of a visit to the local farmers market, this is a true stand-out among a growing crowd of books for novice locavores.”

Spilling The Beans by Julie Van Rosendaal & Sue Duncan

Right, now I feel bad about posting the picture of the chicken. If it makes you feel bad too, then I will suggest beans.

“Spilling the Beans covers it all, from how to cook up beans and grains, to how to add healthy fibre to your favourite desserts. An entire section on baking delicious desserts with beans amps up cakes, bars, and cookies with flavour and fibre. With so many delicious desserts with beans as the hidden ingredient, this book is sure to be the talk of many a dinner party. And it’s a surefire way to get more healthful foods into children’s diets, as well.”

Beans and dessert. I might have to be convinced, but that is another good reason to buy this book.

Gordon Ramsay’s Family Fare by, you have guessed it, Gordon Ramsay.

You have heard all about him, you have watched his shows and maybe even ate at one of his restaurants. I have not been to his restaurants, but have watched his shows and at times I have been left feeling very hungry and always wondering what the food tastes like.

“Drawing on different traditions he features home cooked dishes that range from traditional roasts to lighter summer fare, from easy 30-minute meals to Italian, Indian, and Moroccan-influenced family feasts. As always, Ramsay is there to help the home cook at every stage, buying the right ingredients, preparation and serving, and helping coordinate the cooking of several dishes to arrive on the table simultaneously.”

With this book you will definitely get to know Mr Ramsay’s taste buds. Scallops anyone?

Flavour Thesaurus by Niki Segnit

A what?

“Ever wondered why one flavour works with another? Or lacked inspiration for what to do with a bundle of beetroot? The Flavour Thesaurus is the first book to examine what goes with what, pair by pair. Beautifully packaged, The Flavour Thesaurus is not only a highly useful, and covetable, reference book that will immeasurably improve your cooking – it’s the sort of book that might keep you up at night reading.”

Beautiful indeed. Look.

With simple instructions, lovely color photographs, and downloadable templates, Paper + Craft makes it a cinch to turn a blank sheet into a pretty paper treat.”

Yesss, creative therapy. Also, there is a dog on the cover.

tea anyone?

During the weekend I went to one of the local Chinese supermarkets. Usually when I go to any store and need to get something specific, I walk straight to that aisle, get the product and leave.

Not at a Chinese supermarket, nuh uh. You have to start at the one end and work your way through to the other end. Then back again. Very important to repeat this process.

I was amazed at the beautiful tea sets. Even though the tea pot that was on display was broken, I would love to go back and buy a few of these. They are too beautiful not to share, and great as gifts. My mom has already placed an order for a set.

R150 = a little over $20 (for the entire 7 piece set).

Rice bowls and tea cups.

The most expensive thing on the shelf was $6 and a few cents.

Pretty little sake cups.

After a long time of browsing, reading labels and trying to figure out ‘what is inside’, I headed over to the snack aisle. Now for some reason they do not have any English words on these packs.

I saw a rather large (well-built) Asian man take a pack from the top shelf without hesitating. I took one too, I mean, he looked healthy, so it will be ‘safe’. Later when I got home I noticed that there is one English word on the packaging – ‘happy’. Suspicious? Nah, it was tasty. Still have no idea what I ate though.

One thing is for sure, I did not buy any of these snacks. Found in the ‘egg aisle’.

Tea time!

brb.

In this case it means a day or 2 (or 3).

On Saturday I went for a live blood analysis and learned a few things about my body that I clearly did not know. Oops. Yes, big oops. Just because you look healthy, does not mean that you are in top form.

It is the inside that counts, like always. Aw.

Within 2 weeks time I might turn green, because I have opted for a green juice diet. Not the type of diet where you forget to eat, nope. Wait, rather go here. I will explain everything in detail.

Eating healthy and being conscious of everything you put into your mouth can be hard work. So for the next few days I will be working on the new routine and deciding what to have for dinner.

Narry needs suggestions. Pah-leez!

Yes, this will be oh-so-boring, but please remember that you can always go here (I know, I look at these all the time, even though I am not allowed to eat most of it right now).

“Do not go hungry, go healthy.”
(I will be honest – I am huuungry.)

hello little potato.

Not just any little potato. A Hasselback potato.

A Hasselback potato?
Because it has fancy slices and you roast it with butter and oil. That makes it a Hasselback. Did not know that, did you? Me neither, it is okay.

This one is served with spinach cashew pesto.

I do not even love potatoes, but I can love one of these.

Look at the fresh garlic between the gorgeous potato slices. Yum!
This really is a good looking potato (and friend).

Hungry? Want one? It takes 1 hour to make, so drink a big glass of water in the meantime and go to Joy’s blog for the recipe.

Bless your arteries.

a few little things.

Yes, that was a long thing – and a lot of it. It will be taking place tomorrow. If you are in the area, it would be lovely to see you there.

There are only a few more days left, then I will be jetting off to a very special place. Extra long holidays mean extra long fun.

Okay, this post is not about ‘little things’ and definitely not ‘a few’ either.

Rephrase.

a whole lotta stuff.

Much better.

Today, I went to the doctor for a check up. I am not the type who runs to the doctor for every little thing, because I believe a bath, lots of water and sleep can fix anything. Today was different, and for as long as The Oprah Winfrey Show is on television, I will be listening to the experts. They were talking about cholesterol, blood glucose levels and a few other things. What better way to start the new year than to know that you are healthy? I made her draw blood (she did not want to at first – apparently I am a reluctant bleeder, thanks!) and got tested for a few things. Yes, there is that few again. Worth it.

Earlier today, my dearest Marenna gave me a whole lotta stuff. Stuff I tend to love.

See? You are jealous, huh? Yeah, I would be too. I do not like the word ‘luck’, so I will not call myself lucky, but I am one happy (and blessed) Narry.

Right now, I am having the shakes, because I want to stick those Star Sticky Notes all over the place. Who needs a cellphone reminder when you have these?

Might have to sit on my hands.

Oh! I have developed a love for stir-fried baby corn and asparagus with garlic and ginger. It has to be crunchy. You have to try it. Remember to sprinkle with a bit of salt to get rid of the bitter taste.

Here is to health, happiness and delayed wrinkles (thanks to Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair).

Yours (with a squeeze),
Narry aka Confessed Post-it addict.

wearable foods.

Seeing that all I have been talking about is food, why not show you Wearable Foods by Sung Yeonju.

That is a tomato dress. Uh huh. Much better than Lady Gaga‘s meat dress.

Lotus root. How beautiful is this pattern?

Eggplant. Love me some eggplant parmesan, but this – wow.

And who would have thought – bubblegum.

That is it – enough food talk.
